Interview with Dr. Shalini Malhotra from NeeV Learning Centre/India
On 10.2.21, we, the Q1 CertiLingua course, conducted an interview with Dr. Shalini Malhotra. She is the founder and director of NeeV, an Indian organisation that provides underprivileged children with education and access to the health system and labour market.
The initiative was launched in 2007 with the intention of overcoming the pervasive poverty of disadvantaged children in the Gurgaon community through education, thereby giving them a new perspective for their future. Dr. Malhotra Shalini told us that she herself comes from a family that has been successful in helping poor children in her area and it was a natural choice for her to try this project herself. She also believes in the importance of good health for children to achieve their dreams, so she included health facilities in the project and has since been working for the education and health of hundreds of children in Gurgaon.
At the beginning of our interview, Dr Shalini Malhotra told us that informal education was a key problem for many underserved children in India. Most Indian children living in poverty are unable to go to school and learn the knowledge and skills that are essential for any child’s development. Dr. Shalini Malhotra’s response to our question about what the future holds for children without an education underscores how significant education is to a child’s life journey. Because without this opportunity, children remain uneducated, never get the chance for good vocational training and start committing crimes that eventually accompany them throughout their lives. Many parents from Gurgaon therefore rely on the organisation and that it will change their children’s future. According to Dr. Shalini Malhotra, it is equally important to talk to the parents and encourage them to send their children to the learning centre. We were saddened to hear that the biggest problem for many children is that they do not get enough to eat and therefore often come to school hungry. Providing regular meals is therefore a priority, she said.
It is particularly pleasing that more than 300 children from the community are now involved in the project. But what actually inspired Dr. Shalini Malhotra to found NeeV? To this question, she replied that she was very moved by the fate of the lost children and decided to start Neev NeeV after completing her Master’s degree in Environmental Studies. The parents’ gratitude and the results achieved gave her energy and made her never give up on the realisation of her project.
The current Corona crisis is affecting the organisation and its commitment like any other educational institution in the world. Dr. Shalini Malhotra told us that the children can be taught digitally or they can teach each other in the villages. Shalini also makes sure that at least one class a day can be taught by her, so that she can continue to interact with the children.
With this in mind, Dr. Shalini Malhotra emphasises that everyone can contribute to supporting the foundation. For example, anyone can get involved as a teacher, participate in online courses and thus play a part in the project. Furthermore, the financial support for NeeV is also very valuable. Through the support money, teachers are paid better, the facility can be expanded and, above all, it is the children and young people who ultimately benefit from it.
For Dr. Shalini Malhotra, every day she spends with the children is memorable and she suggests that her only wish is that more and more children can be helped in the future. She wishes she had someone to take her place so that there would be more facets to further develop the organisation.
In conclusion, we would like to especially acknowledge and appreciate Dr. Shalini Malhotra’s great work over the years for so many children and young people in need, as we hope that all of this can be implemented for other children in the future.

Am 10.2.21 führten wir, der Q1 CertiLingua Kurs, ein Interview mit Dr. Shalini Malhotra. Sie ist die Gründerin und Leiterin von NeeV, einer indischen Organisation, die unterprivilegierten Kindern Bildung und Zugang zum Gesundheitssystem und Arbeitsmarkt ermöglicht.
Die Initiative wurde 2007 mit der Absicht ins Leben gerufen durch Bildung die allgegenwärtige Armut von benachteiligten Kindern der Gemeinde in Gurgaon zu überwinden, um ihnen dadurch eine neue Perspektive für ihre Zukunft zu geben. Dr. Malhotra teilte uns mit, dass sie selbst aus einer Familie kommt, die armen Kindern in ihrer Umgebung erfolgreich helfen konnte und es für sie eine nahliegende Wahl gewesen ist dieses Projekt selbst einmal anzustreben. Da sie außerdem an die Bedeutung einer guten Gesundheit von Kindern für die Verwirklichung ihrer Träume glaubt, schloss sie Gesundheitseinrichtungen in das Projekt mit ein und setzt sich seither für die Bildung und Gesundheit hunderter Kinder in Gurgaon ein.
Zu Beginn unseres Interviews hat uns Dr. Shalini Malhotra mitgeteilt, dass die informelle Bildung ein zentrales Problem für viele unterversorgte Kinder in Indien sei. Die meisten indischen Kinder, die in Armut leben, können nicht zu Schule gehen und das Wissen und die Fähigkeiten erlernen, die für die Entwicklung jedes Kindes wichtig sind. Dr. Shalini Malhotras Antwort auf unsere Frage, wie die Zukunft der Kinder ohne eine Ausbildung aussehe, unterstreicht, wie bedeutsam Bildung für den Lebensweg eines Kindes ist. Denn ohne diese Möglichkeit bleiben Kinder ungebildet, erhalten nie die Chance für eine gute Berufsausbildung und beginnen mit Straftaten, die sie letztendlich ihr ganzes Leben lang begleiten. Viele Eltern aus Gurgaon vertrauen deshalb sehr auf die Organisation und daran, dass sie die Zukunft ihrer Kinder verändert. Laut Dr. Shalini Malhotra sei es genauso wichtig, mit den Eltern zu reden und sie zu ermutigen ihre Kinder in das Lernzentrum zu schicken. Es machte uns betroffen zu hören, dass das größte Problem vieler Kinder sei, dass sie nicht genug zu essen bekommen und daher oft hungrig zur Schule erscheinen. Die Versorgung mit regelmäßigen Mahlzeiten sei daher eine Priorität.
Besonders erfreulich ist die Tatsache, dass mittlerweile mehr als 300 Kinder aus der Gemeinde in das Projekt eingebunden sind. Doch was hat Dr. Shalini Malhotra eigentlich dazu inspiriert NeeV zu gründen? Auf diese Frage entgegnete sie, dass sie das Schicksal der verlorenen Kinder sehr bewegte und sie sich, nachdem sie ihren Master in Umweltstudien abgeschlossen hatte, dazu entschloss, NeeV zu gründen. Die Dankbarkeit der Eltern und die erbrachten Ergebnisse haben ihr Energie gegeben und sie dazu gebracht die Verwirklichung ihres Projektes nie aufzugeben.
Die derzeitige Corona Krise beeinflusst die Organisation und ihr Engagement wie jede andere Bildungseinrichtung auf der Welt. Dr. Shalini Malhotra erzählte uns, dass die Kinder digital unterrichtet werden können oder sie sich in den Dörfern gegenseitig unterrichten. Außerdem kümmert sich Shalini darum, dass zumindest eine Klasse am Tag unterrichtet werden kann, um dadurch mit den Kindern weiterhin in Kontakt treten zu können.
Vor diesem Hintergrund betont Dr. Shalini Malhotra, dass jeder zur Unterstützung der Stiftung beitragen kann. Zum Beispiel kann sich jeder als Lehrer engagieren, an online Kursen teilnehmen und somit in dem Projekt mitwirken. Des Weiteren ist auch die finanzielle Unterstützung für NeeV sehr wertvoll. Durch die Unterstützungsgelder werden Lehrer besser bezahlt und die Einrichtung kann erweitert werden und vor allen Dingen sind es letztendlich die Kinder und Jugendlichen, die davon profitieren.
Für Dr. Shalini Malhotra ist jeder Tag denkwürdig, den sie mit den Kindern verbringt und sie legt uns nahe, dass sie sich einzig und allein wünscht, dass in Zukunft mehr und mehr Kindern geholfen werden kann. Sie wünscht sie sich jemanden, der ihren Platz einnimmt, damit es auch zukünftig mehr Facetten gibt, um die Organisation weiterzuentwickeln.
Abschließend betrachtet möchten wir ganz besonders Dr. Shalini Malhotras großartige Arbeit, die sie bereits all die Jahre für so viele notbedürftige Kinder und Jugendliche geleistet hat hervorheben und wertschätzen, denn wir hoffen sehr, dass auch für andere Kinder in der Zukunft all dies verwirklicht werden kann.
Wir danken Dr. Shalini Malhotra für ihre Zeit und die Gelegenheit mit ihr über das Projekt sprechen zu dürfen. Vielleicht wird es zukünftig weitere Kontakte geben, so dass noch weitere Schülerinnen und Schüler die Gelegenheit bekommen können, mit Kindern aus Gurgaon zu sprechen.
